Trama: Tony Nathan entra a far parte di una polveriera di rabbia e di violenza quando nei primi anni Settanta a Birmingham, in Alabama, si unisce ai compagni afroamericani della squadra di football del liceo Woodlawn, dopo le leggi di segregazione emanate dal governo nel 1973. Il team è allenato da Tandy Geralds, un uomo chiamato a tenere a bada i problemi dei giovani, che riflettono quelli dell'intera cittadina. La situazione prende una piega che lascia ben promettere quando Tandy viene avvicinato da Hank, un outsider che porta con sé messaggi di speranza e amore dettati dalla fede in Gesù.
