Trama: Carl Brashear, figlio di un agricoltore del Kentucky, se ne va di casa in cerca di quella che si aspetta sia una vita migliore. "Non mollare mai... sii sempre il migliore", gli aveva detto suo padre, e Carl prende a cuore quel viatico. Dopo essersi arruolato in Marina, che da poco si è aperta alle minoranze etniche, per due anni scrive oltre cento lettere prima che l'arma lo accetti nel programma di Scuola Sub. Ma il suo ufficiale istruttore, Billy Sunday, non vuol sentirne né di Carl né delle sue ambizioni. E perseguita e sfida Carl senza pietà.
