Trama: Nel 2200 un incrociatore spaziale approda sul pianeta Altair 4, dove vent'anni prima s'era perduta la precedente spedizione, e lo trova dominato da Morbius, scienziato megalomane che si trova li con figlia e un robot tuttofare che ha costruito. Il pianeta sembra abitato da mostruose e aggressive entità, creature nate dall'inconscio dei Krels, precedenti abitanti del pianeta, che grazie ad una grande macchina hanno potuto sviluppare a dismisura le proprie capacità intellettive, ma tutto ciò portò alla loro drammatica estinzione. Anche il prof. Morbius, in passato, ha usato la macchina su di se col risultato di entrare in coma per qualche giorno e risvegliarsi molto più intelligente di prima, ma alcuni effetti collaterali portarono di nuovo morte sul pianeta.
